Even though Guy ‘Dr. Disrespect’ Beahm isn’t the biggest fan of Epic Games’ Fortnite, he did admit that the game has something no other competitors offer – a new mechanic.
Fortnite Battle Royale has gone on to become one of the world’s most popular video games with millions still actively playing since it’s 2017 launch.
The Doc has publicly been against Fortnite due to the game’s “just build” meta where players tend to defensively build instead of engaging in a gunfight.
Fortnite vs Apex
On June 10 during his stream on Twitch, he talked with his audience about the game and why players were instantly curious.
“What made that game so intriguing and why people latched on it was this ability to build a wall and a ramp while you’re fighting somebody at the same time, in real time. It was a new mechanic, and it created a skill gap. That second-to-second mechanic, I’m not seeing a lot of from the industry.”
One game to compare against Fortnite is Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends, where players can choose between nine different Legends which have special abilities.
The Doc claims that even though Apex’s approach is unique and intriguing, it won’t be enough to keep up with Epic’s constantly evolving cycle of content.
“The exact opposite approach is like Apex, for example. All you did is press a button at a certain time, and you go invisible for a set amount of time, and then you’re out of it. There’s not a lot of control; you’re not giving full control to the player.”
Dr. Disrespect’s opinion on Apex and Fortnite don’t seem to be too far off as Fortnite still continues to beat its competitors in player count, streamers, and viewers.
Apex Legends saw a massive wave of new players when it surprisingly launched in February, however, the development team has had a difficult time keeping up with demand and bug fixes.
Apex Legends Season 2 will launch on July 2, 2019.
