Both casual and competitive Fortnite players have been calling for the addition of a ‘ranked’ game mode and we may finally be getting just that.

On Monday, March 25th, Epic Games revealed all the details for the upcoming Fortnite World Cup events. This included information on schedules, rules, and even…a possible ranked game mode.

Here’s the official statement from Epic Games on the matter:

Arena Mode (Always On)

“This is your chance to qualify for the weekend Online Opens. Players can compete on their own schedule to try and progress to the Champion League in the brand new Arena game mode releasing in v8.20. If you can climb to the top, you’ll unlock access to the Fortnite World Cup Online Open tournaments.”

So, from the sounds of it, we might be seeing a permanent ranked game mode arriving with the release of the v8.20.

While the details are still really hazy, Champion League looks to be the highest rank achievable. We do not yet know how you rank up, but we suspect that the mode’s scoring will be very similar to the Fortnite World Cup scoring.

The mode is also expected to be limited to Solo and Duo gameplay due to these being the primary competitive modes of play. Here’s the scoring layout for the Fortnite World Cup:

Solos

  • Victory Royale: 10 Points
  • 2nd – 5th: 7 Points
  • 6th – 15th: 5 Points
  • 16th – 25th: 3 Points
  • Each Elimination: 1 Point

Duos

  • Victory Royale: 10 Points
  • 2nd – 3rd: 7 Points
  • 4th – 7th: 5 Points
  • 8th – 12th: 3 Points
  • Each Elimination: 1 Point

Though the details are still coming in, we can speculate a tiny bit on the contents of the game mode.

We know that the ‘Arena Mode’ will be the only way to enter the Semi-Final events of the Fortnite World Cup, so playing in this mode will be crucial for competitive players hoping to get a piece of that $40 million dollar prize pool.

We suspect that in addition to the highest “Champion League” rank, we’ll be seeing anywhere between 5-8 different ranks through which you will proceed based on your performance in relation to other players.

Due to the scoring and ranking system, the mode will not be reliant on play-time alon. While playing a good amount will help you succeed, players will actually have to perform to progress through the ranks.

No word yet on any possible MMR systems based off the scoring. The system must be quite robust for their trust in it for a $40 million dollar tournament.

Once v8.20 releases, you are going to want to hop into ‘Arena Mode’ immediately. Get to grinding and have a chance to play against pros as you can compete within your skill level. Expect to see many of your favorite streamers grinding Arena over next few months.

Arena Mode is an excellent way, provided it works properly, to ensure the best players make it into the World Cup weekend events. This way we will see the best competition each weekend and maybe even see some insane upsets if a pro or two can’t cut it in Arena.
