With the recent announcement of Xbox One’s ability to cross play with PC, Mac, iOS and Android on Fortnite, many have been left wondering if we’ll ever see the option to squad up between both consoles.

The current system forbids this, preventing players from PS4 and Xbox One from partying up despite allowing them to join with those on PC, Mac and Mobile. Judging by recent tweets, however, it seems this is down to Sony’s desire to keep them separate with Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox, being very much open to the idea:

Not only this, Epic Games themselves also showed interest in allowing cross play between the consoles, responding to Phil’s tweet with a simple “We 3!”:

This was also seen last year with Rocket League which allows cross play between many different platforms, but still nothing between Xbox One and PS4.

Sony doesn’t seem to be completely against the idea though with Jim Ryan, PlayStation’s global sales and marketing head stating the following in an interview with Eurogamer regarding the situation around Rocket League:

“It’s certainly not a profound philosophical stance we have against this. We’ve done it in the past. We’re always open to conversations with any developer or publisher who wants to talk about it.”

Perhaps Fortnite’s massive success and Epic’s influence will convince them to think again about the possibility of cross console play, nothing is a certainty though and we wouldn’t expect anything to happen for a while. In the meantime, we’ll have to keep hoping!
