The rumors turned out to be true. Epic will be hosting a Fortnite Winter Royale Duo competition as their next major tournament.
Almost a month ago, now, we reported on some rumors that circulated on Twitter about a Winter Royale Duos competition being the next major tournament for Fortnite.
There wasn’t any substantial evidence to back up these claims, but it made sense for an FNCS Duos event to follow the Squads tournament. As it turns out, though, these rumors held more weight than we knew.
Some of these pro players and coaches must have known something that the rest of us didn’t. Either that or they guessed correctly.
On December 5, Epic posted a blog that outlined some additional details on the FNCS Squads competition. In that blog, the competitive team announced that they would be hosting a Fortnite Winter Royale 2019 Duos competition.

“Winter Royale is back in 2019 and bigger than ever! Three separate Duos tournaments on three different days in December with $5M prize pools each day. All server regions will take part in platform-specific Duos competition that will be open to any rank of player. The in-game events and rules will be posted soon for additional details.”
The team stated that Winter Royale was coming for 2019, so it must be kicking off as soon as the FNCS Squads Finals wrap up.
We’ve already seen some high-profile players announce their teammates for future Duo events. MrSavage will be playing with Endretta while his former teammate, BenjyFishy, plays with Mongraal.
It seems like Epic is really digging into their pockets for this one. It’s going to be a platform and region-specific contest, so the $5 million daily prize pool will be fractured. Still, that’s a whole lot of money to throw around. Just in time for the holidays!
For now, we’ll have to wait for more details as the squad announcements undoubtedly come rolling in. Are you going to watch this tournament or compete? Let us know in the comments.
