The Fortnite Pump vs. Tac debate might be the biggest community disagreement in Chapter 2. This damage comparison shows exactly how both weapons perform.
Before Fortnite Chapter 2, the Pump Shotgun was the wave. Almost everyone preferred the Pump over the Tac because of the ability to deal high amounts of damage with a single shot.
Epic significantly nerfed the Pump Shotgun in Fortnite Chapter 2. This led the community to embrace the Tac in most cases, with a few people preferring the Pump for box fighting.
Is this strategy correct, though? Is the Tac really that much better than the Pump? Reddit user bergovgg put it to the test.
Pump vs. Tac damage
After looking at this chart, the first thing that jumps out is the fact that the Gray Pump is the worst shotgun in the game. It only ever does more damage than a Gray Tac if you hit a headshot from one tile away.
The Green Pump vs. Green Tac is a bit more fair, with the pump hitting for slightly more up close. Still, the green tac is better from range and can shoot faster, so it’s not worth trading a one-tile headshot for more consistent damage.
From this table, it would appear that the only time you should consider taking a Pump over a Tac is when the Pump is Blue or better. You can hit for more damage with a single shot of the Blue Pump, meaning it’s better for box fighting. Still, the Tac wins in most other situations.
Purple and Gold Pumps are worth considering over their Tac counterparts – and certainly over anything Blue or worse. These guns can one-shot, which is the reason players use them.

There’s still a strong argument to be made for the Purple/Gold Tac, however. It all depends on how you play and what you prioritize. Some players may even choose a Blue Tac over a Gold Pump.
In my opinion, shotguns are in a better state than they ever have been before. Those who prioritize the one-shot damage will be happy with the Blue to Gold Pumps, while players who prefer to get in their opponents’ faces will like the Tac better.
There are pros and cons to using either weapon, which is how it should be. Which shotgun do you prefer? Let us know in the comments.
