Epic Games made the decision to remove the pump shotgun in favor of the combat shotgun in Fortnite Battle Royale Season 9, however, the gun’s drop rate is seemingly low. One fan was able to put the gun’s drop rate to the test, and it failed miserably.

Fortnite Season 9 kicked off with a whole new look for Tilted Towers and Retail Row, the addition of slipstreams, and the dreaded removal of the pump shotgun.

Players woke up on “new season day” gutted to see that the one gun that has been in the game since Fortnite Battle Royale launched was dropped into the vault.

In order to fill the void that was left with the pump shotguns vaulting, Epic Games added the combat shotgun which comes in rare, epic, or legendary variants.

Putting drop rates to the test

PumpShotgunBad on the FortniteCompetitive subreddit posted his trial results of testing the Combat Shotgun’s drop rate compared to other weapons in the game, and the results were astounding.

According to the user, they opened 1,100 Fortnite Battle Royale chests to only be rewarded with 17 combat shotguns.

Along with their results, the user included the valid reality of, “Image getting only 1 combat [shotgun] out of 100 chests?”

Heavy Shotgun returning?

There is some evidence that Heavy Shotguns could be returning to Fortnite.

Recent changes to the weapon are shown in Season 9’s loading screen which features the Stratus character wielding a Heavy Shotgun.

It’s possible the Combat Shotgun’s drop rate is low in order to make room for the re-introduction of the Heavy Shotgun.

Community reactions

The newest shotgun to enter Fortnite certainly hasn’t had the best response from the community.

FaZe Clan’s Nickmercs was streaming in May showing off the new shotgun when he was able to deal 10 to 20 damage to another player almost 10 tiles away.

One fan posted a video on Reddit simply titled “hitboxes are beyond broken”, clearly showing the Combat Shotgun’s reticle above the enemy’s head but still deals maximum damage.

What are your thoughts on the Combat Shotgun? Do you think Epic Games should adjust the weapon’s drop rate or should they remove it all together?
