In an interview with Geoff Keighley at E3 2019 Coliseum, Donald Mustard of Epic Games gave some insight into the similarity between Fortnite’s Reaper skin and the John Wick character played by Keanu Reeves.

The Reaper skin was awarded to Fortnite players for reaching Tier 100 in the Season 3 Battle Pass. Since its reveal, the bulk of the Fortnite community has referred to this as the John Wick skin; interestly enough, Mustard says that this was not the intention.

In the John Wick film series, Wick is a legendary assassin seeking vengeance at any cost. This persona and suited style has become an icon in recent culture with the release of John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.

To celebrate the aforementioned film’s release, Epic Games teamed up with Chad Stahelski, Director, to bring the Wick’s Bounty Limited Time Mode and cosmetics to the world of Fortnite- officially.

Here’s what Donald Mustard, Worldwide Creative Director at Epic Games, has to say on the subject of likeness between the two characters:

“I happened to end up in a spot where Keanu and I were together, talking about some stuff, and we were like “What if, what if this kinda made sense?” And [Keanu] was into it, especially because we have this character in Fortnite called The Reaper which kinda—it wasn’t intentional! For me, we were just trying to, like, let’s just make this super awesome The Man In Black. But [Keanu] was starting to have all these kids come up to him, all these teenagers on the street, and they weren’t doing the normal “Oh you’re Neo, oh you’re Wick.” They were doing, “Fortnite guy! Fortnite guy!” [Keanu]’s like “What is this Fortnite thing?” And then of course he’s like, “That doesn’t look like me, that’s not me,” and he’s like, “We gotta do it right.” So I think that’s when we met… It just felt inevitable and made a lot of sense that we would do something together.”

What are your thoughts on Donald Mustard’s stance on The Reaper skin’s appearance being strikingly similar to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick character?
