Eric Williamson, Design Lead at Epic Games working on Fortnite has provided the Fortnite Battle Royale Developer Update for August 31st, 2018. The highlights of this update include Storm Destruction, Vaulting The Revolver, and Item Update.
A new mechanic called Storm Destruction will be added alongside Patch v5.40. Storm Destruction is described as:
…The edge of the storm will do damage to player-built structures in the final phases of the game.
Williamson then goes on to say that less than 10% of matches will be affected by Storm Destruction. The design decision to add Storm Destruction was to adjust the final stages of matches to provide more tactical and dynamic gameplay.
All player-built structures close to the edge of Storms 7, 8, and 9 will be destroyed. The pulse happens when each closing Storm finishes shrinking. Objects deep in the Storm, or in the middle of the safe-area, are unaffected.
Patch v5.40 also brings the death of the Revolver, a weapon which has been in Fortnite Battle Royale since its launch in September 2017. However, the vaulting of a weapon does not mean it will not return, as we’ve seen with the Guided Missile. This decision was made as…
An initiative to keep the Item pool fresh, exciting, dynamic…
Epic will be targeting future updates- potentially Season 6, as an opportunity to vault more Items.
A new mobility Item will be added alongside Patch v5.40. Epic looks forward to the community’s creative expression with the Item.
Various balance parameters such as Item rarity will be adjusted. Remote Explosive rarity will change from Rare to Epic to match its effectiveness.
Item stack sizes will also see various adjustments:
- Boogie Bomb: Drop stack size increased from 1 to 2
- Shield Potions: Maximum stack size increased from 2 to 3
Players with a keen eye on Twitter and /r/FortniteBR have noticed quite a few changes which weren’t mentioned in this Developer Update. These are likely to be included alongside the v5.40 Patch.
- Construction at Tilted Towers has completed
- Dual Pistols Rarity changed from Legendary to Rare
- Silenced Pistol Rarity changed from Legendary to Rare
- New UI icon next to player’s names indicating a microphone
- UI updates to the color next to player’s names
- The final Storm Circles can be much farther into the storm from the current circle
An official release date for Patch v5.40 has yet to be announced, we can expect to see it during the first week of September 2018. Watch the full Developer Update video below…
