Epic Games announced yesterday that Fortnite Battle Royale would soon be coming to mobile devices, with an invitational beta on iOS starting Monday 12th.

One line that caused a lot of confusion was “Fortnite Battle Royale will support Cross Play and Cross Progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and eventually Android. This means players across devices can squad up with friends and play together.”.

A lot of people interpreted this to mean that Battle Royale matchmaking would now include players from all platforms; pairing them up to fight against each-other, but this isn’t the case. This was cleared up by Nick Chester on Twitter who explained that the cross play feature is “opt-in for players who want to squad up”:

The people you party up with has an effect on what matchmaking pool is used for your game, every device is not put together by default. To clarify, PC and PS4 players will not be able to join a mobile queue, but mobile players will be able to join a PC or PS4 queue.
